The Broken Heart

The Broken Heart follows a journey of yearning of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

The first verse comes from a dream i had. I woke up in the middle of the night and although I do not remember the dream, these words were in repetition in my mind.

The second verse comes in the form of an attempt to match the caliber of the first verse.

The third verse came to me after a morning worship session with my teachers. We had gone to a retreat near Dundee and after the morning prayers, we learned about some verses in the Qur’an, recited old Islamic poetry and sent blessings upon our Messenger ﷺ.

The theme of the poem is my heart speaking about this yearning of the Prophet ﷺ to visit me in my dreams. How I imagine what it would be like to be in their presence. I finish this poem off with the hard reality that my heart is not pure enough to be visited by the Prophet ﷺ. And so, I seek purification from God to be blessed with such a visit.

in 2018, a year after writing this poem, I was blessed to visit the city of Madinah, where my teacher, Shaykh Amer Jamil requested me to recite this poem entering and leaving Madinah. The biggest honour of my life. I have also felt like it was God’s way to tell me that the Prophet wouldn’t be visiting me but I would be visiting them ﷺ. Which, also taught me that this was the proper etiquette of yearning.
